Facebook has launched its first app dedicated to the iPad. The new Facebook app (download here) joins other popular social-networking apps on the iPad including Twitter, Flipboard, and Gowalla, all of which have had a head start on Facebook.
Facebook say the “full Facebook experience” features larger photos for a vivid slideshows on-the-go, a search bar at the top of the left-hand navigation menu, and groups, lists, games and apps are also located on the left-hand menu, while notifications and messages are at the top of every screen keeping you in the facebook experience at every moment. Users can also take advantage of the iPad’s sizable touch screen to video chat with friends, IM, and play games using full-screen mode and also Watch and record HD video, all within the one app!
Facebook software engineer Leon Dubinsky, said that the app is designed to create a “fun” experience on the tablet. He went on to highlight the improved use of multi-touch gestures. Until now Facebook has encouraged people to use touch.facebook.com for their iPad experience, but the web interface does not offer these advanced features.
“Use your fingertips to scroll through your News Feed. Give the screen a swipe to page through albums. Pinch a picture to zoom in,” wrote Dubinsky. “Your games, apps, groups and lists are in the left-hand menu, so you don’t have to dig around to find the stuff you use most.” “And your messages and notifications are at the top of every screen, so you can respond to friends and keep up with important updates – without losing your place.”
More details are available on Facebook’s blog…
Facebook’s mobile site m.facebook.com, and the iPhone app have also been updated, but tablets running Google’s rival operating system, Android, are now left without a fully-fledged Facebook application.
Facebook is increasingly becoming a mobile company. Today, 350 million out of Facebook’s 800 million users log in via mobile devices. Soon, “more than half of all our users will be mobile users,” Erick Tseng, Facebook’s head of mobile products, recently said at GigaOm’s Mobilize, an annual mobile industry conference held in San Francisco.
