iPhone 4S battery issue – the solution?

The battery issues reported by some owners of the iPhone 4S may be due to a problem in Apple’s location services triggered by the iOS 5 update.

There are roughly 2,500 posts on the Apple forum, echoing the complaint. one recent post reads; “My battery just about lasts for one (working) day, but I can see it draining even if I don’t use it”. So far, Apple has not issued an official statement on the battery drain issue because 2,500 complaints across more than 4 million iPhone 4S units isn’t a huge percentage, but it’s quite clear that this is an issue for a lot of people, although not nearly as big a problem as as “antennagate”, which plagued the iPhone 4′s launch

There has been many theories about what may be causing the problem and plenty of potential fixes on offer, but Oliver Haslam from iDownload Blog appears to be be best solution out there, and the good news is, it’s a simple one: just turn off the “Setting Time Zone” function, which is accessible by visiting Settings, and then Location Services, and then System services.

“it appears that iOS 5′s GM release introduced a bug that causes the Setting Time Zone function to keep the location tracking circuitry running constantly, draining battery power considerably. Switching it off may mean that your iPhone will no longer set its own time zone when you travel, but that’s a small price to pay for having your iPhone last more than 12 hours on a full charge… We have tested this method on 4 different iPhone 4s handsets, including an iPhone 4 and an iPhone 3GS. All have reported drastically improved battery life after switching ‘Setting Time Zone’ off.”

If you can see a purple arrow next to the service, it may well be accessing your location repeatedly, eating away at your handset’s battery life. As the Apple menu describes it, “A purple location services icon will appear next to an item that is currently using your location.” By switching off the Settings Time Zone function, your phone won’t update a new time zone if you travel to a different country. Most of us don’t go jet-setting often enough for this to become an annoyance, let alone a problem, and considering the potential gain, it’s a small price to pay for the more than 12 hours of battery life you should reach on a full charge.
