€70 for first Ice Cream Sandwich tablet, in China

The first slab running Ice Cream Sandwich has made its début, and it’s not any combination of a Galaxy Xoom Transformer as you may have thought. It is in fact, the Ainovo Novo 7 and if you find yourself in China any time soon, it’ll cost you just €70!

Android Community reports that the Novo 7 is the first tablet powered by Ice Cream Sandwich, Google’s latest tablet and smartphone software which made its début last month in the shape of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Ice Cream Sandwich is designed to run on both smartphones and tablets, uniting the phone version, known as Gingerbread with the Tablet version known as Honeycomb.

A tablet of that price, packing Ice cream Sandwich! Now if that doesn’t worry the brains in Apple who are basking in the unparalleled success of the iPad, it will certainly get Amazon’s attention, who are attempting to crack the tablet marked with their low-cost tablet, the Kindle Fire.

Amazon’s Kindle Fire is an affordable tablet with a custom design resulting in a portal for movies, ebooks, music and TV shows. Amazon have restricted the number of features housed in the budget-slate so it’s not going to be a powerhouse of a tablet but it’s exactly that which has kept the price down. Unfortunately, for the foreseeable future, its only available in the US which could potentially allow the Novo 7 or another reasonably priced Android tablet steal Amazon’s piece of the pie outside the US.

So what’s the Novo 7 got? Well its got a 7-inch capacitive multi-touch screen, capable of displaying 1080p video. Also, there’s a 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM, 4GB of internal storage and a microSD slot for extra storage. There’s also a 2-megapixel camera on the front and back, a USB port and a HDMI port.

The manufacturer, MIPS, have claimed that the battery lasts 25 hours for music playback, 6 hours of game-play and 7 hours of web surfing.

Although the Ainovo Novo 7 is currently only available from China, we doubt it will be the last affordable Android tablet to crop up, lets just hope a decent Ice Cream Sandwich tablet hits our Irish shores sometime soon.
